The Enlightened One The birth of Siddhārtha Gautama was said to have enjoyed an immaculate conception; from Queen Maya, his mother dreamed of a white elephant, a symbol of greatness in ancient India—appeared, circled around her three times, and entered her womb through her right side, and legend has it that she gave birth to the future Enlightened One. It is said that immediately after Gautama's birth, he stood up, took seven steps north. with each step the infant Buddha took a lotus flower bloomed.
